Times have certainly changed since the revival of the Irish folk scene in the early 1960's. That era heralded the arrival of entertainers such as the Clancy brothers, the Wolfe Tones and the Dubliners, to mention but a few, and their songs brought joy and entertainment to millions both at home and abroad. We have seen many changes since then and it is unfortunate that despite the tremendous advances made by Irish music, the songs and ballads of past and present generations to not always receive the air play they deserve in this modern age.

However, these are the songs our fathers sang and the songs that the Irish will always sing whenever they gather to celebrate, whether in Ireland or overseas. I have no doubt that the Merry Ploughboys will carry the banner high for a new generation of Irish men and women and, having travelled abroad with the band on numerous occasions, I understand that to sing it like you mean it means everything to the band. Whether the venue is a concert hall, a tavern or elsewhere, I know that when the Merry Ploughboys perform, the people will sing and be heard. Long may they continue to entertain us with their music - the songs that will never die.
